Walled garden no more? iPhone may get RCS soon, Google drops massive hint

Apple’s plan to incorporate Rich Communication Services (RCS) within iMessage by 2024 has gained momentum. Google’s Google Messages webpage revealed a potential release timeframe for RCS on iOS.

While Apple has remained silent on an exact launch date for RCS support, Google’s recent disclosure suggests that the feature might debut with the iOS 18 update or coincide with the release of the iPhone 16 series. Apple’s integration of RCS is anticipated to foster unified cross-device messaging.

The unveiling of a new landing page for Google Messages on the official Android website further underscores the expansion of RCS features. Although the page has been removed, reports indicate it mentioned RCS support coming to iOS in the fall of 2024.

As observed by 9to5Google, the landing page displayed a section labeled “Coming soon on iOS” under the subheading “Better messaging for all.” The description highlighted Apple’s commitment to adopting RCS, promising an enhanced messaging experience for users.

If Apple aims for a fall 2024 release of RCS support, it aligns with the typical timeline for major iOS updates, often rolled out in September alongside new iPhone releases.

Apple announced in November of the previous year its intention to introduce RCS support by 2024, although an exact timeline still needs to be provided. The integration of RCS alongside iMessage is expected to introduce various messaging features such as multimedia support, read receipts, typing indicators, and more. This move will facilitate cross-platform messaging between Android and iOS devices across mobile data or Wi-Fi networks.
