AI will be smarter than the smartest human in the next one or two year, says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, once again, has made some bold predictions on artificial intelligence. In an interview on X Spaces plagued by technological glitches, the tech billionaire claimed that AI engineers will be able to develop a model that is smarter than the most intelligent human next year or by 2026.

In a discussion with Nicolai Tangen, the CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, Musk spoke of the constraints facing AI, particularly citing the availability of electricity as a limiting factor.

“If you define AGI (artificial general intelligence) as smarter than the smartest human, I think it’s probably next year, within two years,” Musk said

He also mentioned the upcoming release of Grok, the AI chatbot from his xAI startup, stating that the next version is expected to be trained by May.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, expressed frustration over the lack of advanced chips affecting the training of Grok’s version 2 model.

He founded xAI last year as an alternative to OpenAI, which he has criticized for deviating from its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.

Training the Grok 2 model reportedly required around 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, and Musk indicated that future iterations would demand even more resources, estimating that Grok 3 and beyond will need 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips.

He emphasized the importance of electricity supply for AI development.

In addition to discussing AI, Musk touched upon the electric vehicle (EV) market, acknowledging Chinese carmakers as formidable competitors to Tesla. He warned that, without trade barriers, Chinese rivals could surpass global competitors.

Regarding labor issues, Musk addressed a recent union strike in Sweden against Tesla, indicating that the situation has calmed down.

During a recent meeting, Tangen noted that Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, a significant shareholder in Tesla, had received an update on the matter from the EV company’s chair.

Musk’s remarks provide insights into his perspective on the future trajectory of AI development, the challenges faced by Tesla in the EV market, and the company’s handling of labor disputes.
