WhatsApp is finally rolling out one of its most anticipated features, usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature has been in development for years, with the company carefully refining it to ensure compatibility with existing tools and maintaining a high level of security.
Rather than rushing the launch, WhatsApp has taken a phased approach. The feature is currently available to a limited group of users, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks, reports WABeta Info.
This gradual release allows the platform to test performance and stability before making usernames available to its global user base.

To check if you have access, open your profile settings within the app. If the feature is enabled for your account, you will see a dedicated option to create a username. The setup process is straightforward and guides users step by step.
Once chosen, the username becomes linked to your account and can be shared instead of your phone number. This adds a layer of privacy, making it easier to connect without exposing personal contact details.
However, WhatsApp has introduced strict rules for creating usernames. They must include at least one letter and may contain only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters long.
To avoid confusion, they cannot start with “www.” or end with domain-like extensions such as .com or .net.
Another key requirement is availability across Meta platforms. If your desired username is already in use on Instagram or Facebook, you will need to verify ownership through Accounts Center before claiming it on WhatsApp. If it belongs to someone else, it cannot be used.
Users should also be mindful of privacy. Choosing the same username across platforms could make it easier for others to link your profiles on Instagram or Facebook. If you prefer to keep accounts separate, selecting a different username is advisable.
For added control, WhatsApp also offers an optional username key. This is a four-digit code required when someone contacts you for the first time, ensuring only those with both the username and the key can reach you.

Finding and messaging users with usernames is designed to be simple. Instead of entering a phone number, you can search for a person using their username directly within the app.
If the account has a username key enabled, you will need to enter the code before starting a conversation. Once connected, messages remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can read them.
Although the feature is still limited in availability, WhatsApp plans to expand access gradually. As testing continues, usernames are expected to become a core part of how users connect on the platform, offering a more private and flexible alternative to phone number-based messaging.
