Ukraine is leading the world into the age of robotic warfare

For decades, autonomous warfare belonged largely to science fiction. Today, it is unfolding in real time across Ukraine’s battlefields.

In what appears to be a landmark moment in military history, Ukraine has reportedly captured a Russian position using only uncrewed ground vehicles and aerial drones, without deploying infantry soldiers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the operation in a social media post on April 14, saying Russian troops had surrendered and that the mission had been completed “without infantry and without losses on our side”.

In March, over 9,000 combat and logistical missions were conducted on the frontline using ground robots. For comparison, there were over 2,900 such missions in November last year, and over 7,500 in January 2026.

While Kyiv has not disclosed operational details, the message signals a profound shift in the use of robotics in war. Machines are no longer merely supporting soldiers. Increasingly, they are becoming soldiers.

From support systems to frontline fighters

Until recently, uncrewed ground vehicles, or UGVs, were used mainly in auxiliary roles. Ukrainian forces relied on them to transport ammunition, evacuate wounded personnel, and carry out mine-clearing operations in dangerous zones. Combat itself still depended largely on infantry.

That line is now blurring rapidly.

Reports over the past year suggest Ukraine has steadily expanded the battlefield role of robotic systems. In January 2026, Ukrainian forces reportedly captured three Russian soldiers in Zaporizhzhia using a single ground robot. Earlier, in March 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian units near Kharkiv used machine gun-equipped ground robots supported by first-person-view attack drones to engage Russian troops.

These developments form part of a broader military strategy championed by Ukraine’s defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, and endorsed by President Zelensky. According to reports, the strategy, known as “Air, Land, Economy”, aims to use advanced weapons systems to intercept Russian attacks, weaken Moscow’s economy, and offset Ukraine’s disadvantage in workforce.

Artificial intelligence remains relatively limited in Ukrainian weapons systems for now. Most AI applications focus on target recognition, such as helping drone operators identify hidden vehicles or camouflaged positions. Yet the pace of innovation is accelerating quickly under wartime pressure.

The rise of robotic assault units

Among the most discussed systems is the Droid TW 12.7, developed by Ukrainian defense technology company DevDroid. The remotely operated robot is equipped with a 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine gun, night-vision capability, and a firing range of roughly one kilometer. Though not fully autonomous, it can execute pre-programmed combat tasks.

Its importance lies not only in its firepower, but also in what it represents.

Ukraine’s military tech start-ups enjoy a rare advantage: they can test new systems directly in active combat zones and rapidly adapt designs based on battlefield feedback. That creates an unusually fast innovation cycle, allowing robotic systems to evolve in months rather than years.

Military analysts increasingly point to the emergence of coordinated “multi-swarm” attacks involving groups of drones and ground robots operating together. Such tactics reduce the exposure of human soldiers while increasing pressure on defenders through relentless surveillance and firepower.

These systems are also relatively cheap compared with tanks or trained infantry units. Losing a robot carries far lower political and military costs than losing soldiers.

There are already signs of their effectiveness. In December 2025, a Droid TW 12.7 reportedly detected and disrupted a Russian night assault near Kostyantynivka, destroying an MT-LB armored vehicle in the process.

A future with fewer humans in combat

The growing use of robotic systems is also exposing tensions within Ukraine’s military leadership.

Fedorov has openly argued that the future battlefield will eventually be dominated by unmanned systems fighting one another on land and in the air. Human losses on the scale seen in conventional wars, he believes, will become politically and strategically unsustainable.

Not everyone agrees. Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, continues to support traditional battlefield maneuvers involving infantry and armored vehicles, reports NYT. A recent dispute between Fedorov’s advisers and frontline commanders after a costly assault near Pokrovsk highlighted the growing divide between advocates of robotic warfare and defenders of conventional tactics.

Yet the broader direction appears unmistakable.

The rapid evolution of drones in Ukraine has already transformed modern warfare. Ground robots now seem poised to follow the same path. Although these systems still face limitations, including rough terrain and vulnerability to electronic jamming, battlefield experience is likely to resolve many of those weaknesses over time.

The ethical and legal questions, however, remain deeply unsettled. Researchers have warned that international law is ill-equipped to regulate autonomous weapons capable of identifying and killing targets with limited human oversight.

What was once imagined as a distant future is arriving far faster than expected. Ukraine’s battlefields are becoming the proving ground for a new era of warfare, one where machines increasingly fight, decide, and perhaps someday kill with minimal human involvement.
