Type through air gestures with Meta Ray-Ban glasses — New update unlocks key features

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, Meta’s flagship smart glasses, have now received a major update featuring a sought-after new capability. This addition sets them apart from the more popular camera-only models. With the latest update, users of the flagship glasses will be able to access neural handwriting. This feature works across both iOS and Android, as well as applications such as InstagramWhatsApp, and Messenger, and extends to phone message notifications for searching contacts and sending replies.

To use these new features, users must wear the smart glasses with the Neural Band accessory, which is bundled with the $800 glasses. Using advanced sEMG technology, the band can recognize subtle finger movements as users write on any surface.

The air-gesture writing feature is part of Meta Update 1.25. The update also introduces a display recording feature that captures still images, camera-point-of-view footage, and surrounding audio into a single video file. Maps have also been enhanced with richer results and walking directions covering the entire US and major international cities such as London, Paris, and Rome, along with improved tools for saving home and work locations and voice navigation support.

WhatsApp now also supports group video calls and phone call options. The new update further enhances Reels and DM navigation, with added widgets for birthdays and sports events.

Ray-Ban Display opens to third-party developers.

With the latest update, Meta has opened access to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses platform to third-party developers. Developers can use the Device Access Toolkit SDK, available for both iOS and Android, to build targeted interfaces for existing native mobile applications or develop dedicated apps.

Community-based apps already offer new features such as transit navigation, aviation tools, grocery lists, and more.
