TikTok planning to launch a new app to take on Instagram, will revolve around a photo feed

TikTok, already a formidable competitor to Instagram in the video-content platform, is preparing to launch an all-out attack and expand its operations with a new photo-based app. This will be a direct assault on rival Instagram’s photo-centric platform.

According to reports from TheSpAndroid (via Matt Navarra), the latest version of the TikTok app contains code referencing a potential new app called “TikTok Photos.” The strings discovered in the code suggest that this app will feature a feed similar to Instagram, where users can share photos with their social circle.

The findings indicate that users can seamlessly share content between the main TikTok app and the Photos app. One string even describes TikTok Photos as a platform for connecting with “like-minded people who enjoy photo posts.”

While details regarding the release date and availability of TikTok photos remain scarce, the evidence suggests that an official announcement could be imminent. This development comes amid concerns raised by creators about Instagram’s shifting focus towards video content, potentially diluting its original purpose as a photo-sharing platform.

If these reports are accurate, TikTok could leverage its dominance in short-form video content to launch its new photo-centric app successfully.

However, the timing of TikTok’s potential expansion could present challenges for its parent company, ByteDance. The United States House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill this week that could ban TikTok in the US.

In response to this legislative development, President Joe Biden expressed support for the bill, indicating his intention to sign it if passed by Congress. The move is part of broader concerns about national security and allegations that ByteDance, a Chinese company, could share user data from TikTok with the Chinese government.

TikTok has vehemently opposed these accusations, asserting that the US government’s efforts to ban the platform infringe on the free expression rights of its users. The company maintains strict data privacy measures and operates independently of government influence.

As the debate over TikTok’s future in the US continues, the potential launch of TikTok Photos adds another layer of complexity to the situation, highlighting the ongoing competition between social media giants and the regulatory challenges faced by international tech companies.
