Sarvam’s Indus enters AI race against ChatGPT, Google Gemini: How to get key features

Sarvam, India’s fast-growing artificial intelligence startup, has released its new AI chat application, Indus, on major app stores, marking a significant step in its push to bring domestically developed AI tools to consumers.

The Indus app is now listed on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, with a companion website also live, though not fully accessible to all users. Indus functions as Sarvam’s AI assistant and has been designed specifically for Indian users.

According to the app listing, the assistant supports “every Indian language” and allows users to switch seamlessly between languages during a conversation — for example, shifting from English to Hindi and back again.

Voice commands, search, and task automation

Indus includes voice command functionality similar to chatbots such as OpenAI ChatGPT and Google Gemini. It can answer queries by searching the web or performing deeper research.

Sarvam also indicates that Indus may introduce AI agents capable of automating tasks. The app suggests users will be able to write and edit documents within the platform itself.

Additional features include uploading images, PDFs, and other files for analysis, enabling the AI to respond to queries based on the uploaded content.

Built on India-made language models

Sarvam has not yet confirmed which model powers Indus. However, the company recently introduced two foundational large language models — Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B — at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Both models were built entirely in India, and Indus may rely on these systems.

The Indus app is available on both Android and iOS, with access tied to phone-number verification. A waitlist is in place for new accounts, though users with invite codes can bypass the queue, according to the app’s listing.
