Samsung joins AI arms race, teases Galaxy AI to take better photos, translate calls in real-time

Samsung is determined to emphasize its commitment to AI technology, unveiling a glimpse of what it dubs “a new era of Galaxy AI” in a recent blog post. The tech giant is set to introduce a range of AI-driven features to its smartphones, focusing on enhancing the user experience through artificial intelligence.

The blog post states, “Galaxy AI is a comprehensive mobile AI experience, powered by both on-device AI developed at Samsung and cloud-based AI enabled by our open collaborations with like-minded industry leaders. It will transform your mobile experience with the peace of mind you count on from Galaxy security and privacy.”

One notable feature in the pipeline is the “AI Live Translate Call,” which will be integrated into Samsung’s native phone app. This feature will provide real-time translations of phone calls, including both audio and text translations, all processed directly on the device.

The official release of Galaxy AI is anticipated “early next year,” suggesting that these AI-driven features will likely be included in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup, which is expected to launch in 2024.

Samsung has also showcased its generative AI model known as “Gauss,” which is set to power various mobile device features starting next year, further hinting at its role in the upcoming Galaxy S24 lineup.

AI-powered capabilities are becoming a key battleground for smartphone manufacturers. For instance, Google has integrated AI-powered tools in its Pixel 8 lineup to enhance photo editing and quality. Meanwhile, Apple is heavily investing in AI development, likely leading to the incorporation of AI-powered features in its iPhones.

In addition to competition among smartphone makers, AI-focused hardware products like Humane’s cellular-enabled AI Pin are emerging, signaling an evolving landscape where AI technology is at the forefront of innovation in the mobile industry.
