Samsung gets patent approval for trifold, rollable smartphone displays, new foldables on the cards

The renowned South Korean tech giant Samsung has achieved a significant milestone by securing patents for its cutting-edge tri-fold and rollable display technologies from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This achievement underscores Samsung’s continued innovation in flexible display technology.

The tri-fold display technology, showcased by Samsung at CES 2022, has been granted a patent by the USPTO. Unlike conventional foldable phones with a book-style fold, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 or the OnePlus Open, Samsung’s tri-fold display envisions a novel approach. The patented design features a display module with at least one folding area, allowing for the expansion of the screen across three panels simultaneously. This innovative configuration offers users a seamless and expansive viewing experience, reminiscent of Samsung’s Flex S technology, which was demonstrated by the company previously.

In addition to the tri-fold display, Samsung has been awarded a patent for its rollable display technology. The patent describes a device housing a rollable display that can be retracted within the enclosure when the device is closed and extended for use when opened. The housing itself is described as “deformable” in two states—closed and open—facilitating the smooth deployment of the display panels through hinges.

While these patents showcase Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of display technology, the company has not disclosed any immediate plans to integrate these innovations into consumer electronics. It is plausible that Samsung is focusing on further refining these technologies to address performance and durability concerns commonly associated with foldable devices before commercial deployment.

Samsung’s relentless pursuit of innovation in flexible display technology underscores its position as a leader in the industry. As the company continues to advance these groundbreaking technologies, consumers can anticipate the possibility of future devices offering enhanced versatility and functionality, redefining the landscape of consumer electronics.
