In a groundbreaking technological leap, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, the world’s largest private mobile data network, has unveiled India’s inaugural satellite-based giga fiber service, poised to provide high-speed broadband connectivity to previously underserved regions.
The demonstration of this innovative service, known as JioSpaceFiber, took place at the India Mobile Congress, which Prime Minister Modi inaugurated. Following the inauguration, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, showcased how JioSpaceFiber would work for the Prime Minister.
JioSpaceFiber is set to launch its services across the length and breadth of India, promising affordability for consumers from all walks of life. It represents a significant milestone in the nation’s quest for digital inclusivity.
The Jio conglomerate, currently delivering high-speed broadband via fixed-line and wireless means to over 450 million Indian users, is committed to accelerating the digital transformation of every household in India.
With the introduction of JioSpaceFiber, it joins its premier broadband services, JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring that consumers and businesses alike gain unprecedented access to reliable, low-latency, high-speed internet, and entertainment services, irrespective of their geographical location.
This satellite-based network will also bolster mobile backhaul capacity, further enhancing the reach and scale of Jio’s True5G network in the most remote corners of the nation.
A key element in realizing.., this ambitious project is Jio’s partnership with SES, which provides access to cutting-edge medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. SES boasts the only MEO constellation capable of delivering truly unique gigabit, fiber-like services from space.
By combining SES’s O3b and the new O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio has positioned itself as the sole entity to offer game-changing technology, ensuring scalable and affordable broadband access throughout India, complete with a level of guaranteed reliability and service flexibility that is unparalleled in the industry.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for this pioneering endeavor, stating, “Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions connected. JioSpaceFiber will allow everyone, everywhere, to fully participate in the new digital society with gigabit access to online government, education, health, and entertainment services.”
He also took a moment to thank PM Modi for his vision to transform India into ‘Viksit Bharat.’
John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, also highlighted the significance of this collaboration, affirming, “Together with Jio, we are honoredfive to support the Government of India’s Digital India initiative with a unique solution that aims at delivering multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India. Our first fiber-like services from space are already deployed today in parts of India, and we cannot wait to see how this will lead to digital transformation even in the most rural parts of the country.” The introduction of JioSpaceFiber promises to be a game-changer in India’s digital landscape, extending high-speed broadband services to previously underserved regions.
To underscore the capability and expansive reach of JioSpaceFiber, the service has already connected four of the most remote locations in India, namely Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. This will prove vital in revolutionizing connectivity in previously lacking access to high-speed internet.
