Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI has introduced a new system called Personal Computer, an AI-powered assistant designed to turn a Mac into an autonomous digital agent capable of completing complex tasks across applications and web services.
Unlike traditional AI tools that respond only when prompted, the new system is designed to operate continuously in the background. Once given a goal, the AI can organise and carry out multiple steps across different platforms without requiring constant user input.
The company describes Personal Computer as a system that transforms a standard Mac into a persistent AI assistant capable of managing workflows, processing information, and executing actions even when the user is not actively interacting with the machine.
“Personal Computer” functions as software installed on an existing Mac device rather than a dedicated piece of hardware, meaning users do not need to purchase a new device to access the feature.
AI assistant that runs directly on a Mac
A personal computer works by integrating directly with the user’s Mac environment, allowing the system to access files, applications, and active browser sessions. By doing so, it can interact with tools and documents in ways similar to how a person might navigate their computer.
Instead of simply answering queries, the AI is designed to interpret a user’s instructions and convert them into a sequence of smaller tasks. These subtasks can then be executed automatically, enabling the system to complete more complicated objectives without requiring step-by-step guidance.
For example, a user could assign a broad project or request, and the AI would determine the individual steps needed to achieve the outcome. It could then proceed to execute those actions across different applications while continuing to monitor progress.
A key aspect of the system is that it remains active in the background. This means the AI can continue working even when the user switches to other tasks or steps away from the device.
Perplexity describes the platform as a continuously running assistant that can operate independently until the requested task is completed.
Multi-model AI designed for complex workflows
One of the defining features of a personal computer is its multi-model architecture. According to Perplexity, the system coordinates around 19 to 20 artificial intelligence models working together behind the scenes.
These models include specialised versions of Claude AI along with other large language models. Each model plays a different role in interpreting user instructions, breaking down tasks, and executing actions.
The combined structure allows the AI to analyse a request, break it into manageable components, and process them asynchronously. In practice, this means the system can work through multiple steps simultaneously while maintaining progress toward the overall goal.
Another notable aspect of the platform is its ability to handle long-running assignments. Users can give the AI an objective that may take several hours or even days to complete, and the system will continue working in the background until it finishes.
To make the system useful for everyday work, the Personal Computer also integrates with widely used productivity tools. The platform supports connections with services such as Gmail, Slack, GitHub, and Notion.
By linking these platforms, the AI can manage workflows that span multiple apps. For instance, it could collect information from emails, organise notes, update project management tools, and coordinate tasks across communication platforms.
The introduction of the personal computer reflects a growing shift in the AI industry towards autonomous digital agents capable of performing complex operations rather than simply generating text or answering questions.
While tools powered by large language models have already transformed how people search for information and write content, systems like Personal Computer suggest that the next phase of AI development may focus on automation that actively completes work on behalf of the user.
