When Mark Zuckerberg tried to buy Snapchat more than a decade ago, the offer was famously turned down. What followed was a long stretch of feature-by-feature competition, with Meta steadily integrating Snapchat-like tools into its own apps. Now, that rivalry seems to be entering yet another chapter.
Enter Instants, Meta’s latest experiment spun out of Instagram. If the company’s 2023 launch of Threads was an unmistakable nod to X (formerly Twitter), Instants feels like a direct callback to Snapchat’s original charm: fast, fleeting, and unfiltered communication.
The difference this time? Meta is no longer just borrowing features. It is packaging them into a standalone app, hoping to carve out a dedicated space for a behaviour that already exists inside Instagram.
Instagram Instants: same-same but different
At its core, Instants is built around one simple idea: capture and share moments as they happen, without overthinking them. The app opens directly to the camera, encouraging users to snap and send photos instantly, with no edits, filters, or polishing.
That design will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has used Snapchat. Much like its rival, Instants revolves around disappearing content. Photos vanish after being viewed and cannot be revisited beyond a 24-hour window. It is communication designed to be temporary, casual, and slightly imperfect.
Meta describes Instants as a way to “connect with your favourite people over life’s little moments”. In practice, that translates into quick exchanges rather than curated posts, a shift away from the highly polished aesthetic Instagram is often known for.
The similarities to Snapchat are hard to ignore. From the camera-first interface to ephemeral messaging, Instants mirrors the very features that made Snapchat popular in the first place. The move suggests Meta is still keen to capture a slice of that spontaneous, close-friends interaction that Snapchat continues to dominate.
At the same time, Instants is not entirely new. The feature previously existed within Instagram’s messaging section under a lesser-known tool called “Shots”. By spinning it off into its own app, Meta is effectively giving that functionality more visibility and focus.
Can you use it?
Instant is currently available on both Android and iOS, although access may vary by region. The app functions as a companion to Instagram rather than a completely separate ecosystem.
One of its more practical features is cross-compatibility. Photos shared via Insta can also be viewed within the main Instagram app, meaning users do not necessarily need to switch between platforms to stay connected. This integration lowers the barrier to adoption and keeps everything tied into Meta’s broader social network.
In essence, Instants is less about introducing something radically new and more about refining how people share everyday moments. It strips back the layers of editing and presentation, pushing users towards quicker, more authentic interactions.
