India has undergone a significant shift in vehicle emission norms over the last decade. As environmental regulations tighten, vehicle owners must know which Bharat Stage (BS) emission standard their vehicle complies with. The BS IV norms were replaced by the BS VI standards in 2020, marking a significant leap in controlling vehicular pollution. If you are unsure whether your car or bike meets the BS IV or BS VI standards, there are a few easy ways to find out.
Checking through the Vihaan portal
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched the Vihaan portal, a digital platform that offers detailed information about vehicles registered in India. By visiting the official website and entering your vehicle registration number, you can instantly access data related to the model, fuel type, and emission standard. This is one of the simplest and most accurate methods because the information comes directly from government records. The portal is regularly updated and ensures transparency for both new and used vehicle owners.
Looking at the registration certificate
In several states, the vehicle registration certificate (RC) clearly indicates whether the vehicle is BS IV- or BS VI-compliant. This document, issued by the Regional Transport Office, serves as official proof of ownership and includes key details about the vehicle. If your RC is printed in a recent digital format, you will likely see “BS VI” or “BS IV” listed under the emissions or fuel section. If the printed version does not display it, you can also check the digital RC in the mParivahan mobile application, which draws its data from the same government database.
Verifying the manufacturing date
Another reliable way to determine your vehicle’s emission standard is to check its manufacture date. India adopted the BS VI norms nationwide from April 2020 onwards. Therefore, any car produced after this date is automatically BS VI compliant. The manufacturing month and year are often displayed on a metal plate fixed inside the engine bay, near the driver’s door, or mentioned in the owner’s manual. Vehicles produced before 2020 typically comply with BS IV norms unless specifically certified otherwise.
Understanding your vehicle’s emission standard is not only useful for compliance but also for resale and environmental awareness. Knowing whether your vehicle complies with BS IV or BS VI standards helps you stay informed and contribute to a cleaner, greener future for India.
