Google has launched Air View+, a cutting-edge solution designed to provide hyperlocal air quality data for over 150 cities in India. Arriving at a time when pollution levels in Delhi-NCR are alarmingly high, the initiative aims to bridge gaps in actionable air quality information.
By collaborating with local climate tech firms and organisations, Google hopes to empower individuals, policymakers, and city administrators with real-time insights to address urban air pollution challenges.
Expansive sensor network under air view+ for accurate monitoring
Air View+ is built on a robust network of air quality sensors, deployed in partnership with climate tech firms like Aurassure and Respirer Living Sciences. These sensors are strategically placed in static locations such as utility poles, administrative buildings, and commercial areas. They monitor key pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, CO2, NO2, ozone, and VOCs, along with temperature and humidity, taking minute-by-minute readings.
The sensors have undergone rigorous validation and calibration in collaboration with IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, state pollution boards, and climate groups like CSTEP. This ensures the reliability of the data, which is then processed using Google AI to generate quick, large-scale insights. The network fills a critical infrastructure gap in cities that previously lacked air quality monitoring systems, offering detailed and accurate data to both citizens and government bodies.
Hyperlocal data on Google Maps
Air View+ integrates seamlessly into Google Maps, enabling users to access real-time air quality data with ease. Using a sophisticated AI fusion system, Google combines information from its sensor network with inputs from government sources, satellite imagery, weather patterns, traffic data, and more. This multi-layered approach provides users with a detailed understanding of local air quality conditions.
To check air quality, users can activate the Air Quality layer via the Layer button on the Google Maps home screen and tap on any location for detailed AQI information. Alternatively, AQI insights for current locations are available through the Weather widget in the Explore tab.
