Google brings AI to Gmail with smart inbox and email search

After enabling Google overview to generate AI responses to people’s questions at the top of the search results, the company is taking a similar step by embedding Artificial Intelligence into another ubiquitously used service, Google Mail.

The AI version will help users manage their bloated inboxes and speed up email writing. Some features are free, and others require a subscription.

Google will roll out this version of Gmail AI this month. Gmail users can now look up emails by typing a question, such as “What’s the name of the job recruiter I met last month?”

The company is also testing a similar inbox, which is set to be released laterd later this year. In addition, Google offers veiled tools to streamline writing, including an automatic proofreader and a response generator.

But if the new AI technology becomes widely adopted by users, it could be the biggest challenge Gmail has faced in decades. It may transform people manually checking their inboxes all day long into a more streamlined experience, an overview that people look at periodically.

All of this can cause implications and invade privacy. To make the new features work, Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, needs access to a user’s entire inbox. The company insists that,t while Gemini systems analyse our emails, protections are in place to prevent its employees from reading them.

The AI inbox will be released in the coming months, followed by similar updates. Managing an email has also been a tedious job. When you receive an email, you can read and reply to it, delete it, or ignore it. Ignoring issues over time adds to stress.

Google’s new AI Inbox fundamentally changes the way people check email. It gives a high-level overview of what you need to know and do, based on meetings and discussions.
