Future iPhones may come with self-healing display, erase minor scratches by itself, reveals patent

Apple has recently been granted a truly groundbreaking patent for a display technology that could potentially reshape the landscape of foldable devices. The patent, titled “Electronic Devices with Flexible Display Cover Layers,” unveils Apple’s innovative plans to introduce a foldable screen equipped with a self-healing layer that can automatically repair minor screen damage,  such as scratches and light gouges, sparking intrigue for the future of technology.

Apple spotted the innovative concept detailed in US patent 11991901. The patent outlines Apple’s proposal for a flexible display covered by a specialized material known as elastomer, enabling it to bend seamlessly.

Atop this flexible screen will lie a self-healing layer designed to effortlessly care for scratches and dents. Whether the damage occurs on the entire display surface or just the flexible section, this layer can autonomously fill in the imperfections, ensuring a smooth and pristine screen.

According to the diagrams accompanying the patent, Apple plans to use various methods to activate the self-healing process. Users can manually initiate the repair mechanism by heating the display, shining a light, or passing a regulated electrical current.

Furthermore, the patent discusses using a heating layer that could activate during charging or when the user activates it through the many, which would further facilitate the healing process.

Despite the exciting development of Apple’s latest innovative patent, it isn’t easy to develop a timeline that could predict when we will see the technology in actual Apple products. However, rumors from the industry suggest that Apple is actively exploring several ambitious projects, including developing a new iPhone SE, a foldable iPad, and AR glasses.

If implemented, this cutting-edge self-healing technology has the potential to not only enhance the durability of future Apple devices but also revolutionize the user experience. It could offer consumers a more resilient and user-friendly product lineup, sparking excitement for the possibilities it opens up.
