Artificial intelligence is no longer just helping technology companies build products. It is now reshaping how those companies operate internally, and increasingly, how many people they employ.
Cloudflare, one of the world’s largest cybersecurity and internet infrastructure firms, has become the latest tech company to announce major job cuts linked to AI-led restructuring. The company confirmed that more than 1,100 employees globally will be laid off as it reorganizes its operations around artificial intelligence and AI agents.
The announcement was delivered to employees through an internal memo on Thursday, where company executives described the move as part of a broader transformation preparing Cloudflare for what it called the “agentic AI era”.
The layoffs come at a striking moment for the company. Just hours earlier, Cloudflare had reported first-quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations. Yet despite the stronger-than-expected results, investor concerns appeared to outweigh the earnings beat, with the company’s shares falling by more than 14 percent in after-hours trading.
Cloudflare layoffs: Who is affected
According to the company memo, Cloudflare has seen a dramatic surge in internal AI adoption over the past few months. Executives said employee use of AI tools and agents has increased by more than 600 percent in the past three months alone.
The company stated that teams across engineering, finance, marketing, and human resources are now collectively using thousands of AI agent sessions each day as part of their regular workflows.
Rather than presenting the layoffs as a response to weak financial performance, Cloudflare described them as part of a structural redesign focused on AI-led efficiency and automation.
Cloudflare has not publicly disclosed which departments or regions will see the largest reductions, though the layoffs are expected to affect employees globally across multiple functions.
Executives stressed that the layoffs were not tied to employee performance or productivity concerns. Instead, the company said it is fundamentally rethinking how teams, workflows, and operations are organized in an environment increasingly shaped by AI-powered systems.
Cloudflare also suggested that the current cuts are intended to avoid future rounds of layoffs. The memo reportedly said the company wanted to take “decisive action” now rather than implement smaller workforce reductions over time.
The announcement places Cloudflare among a growing list of technology firms openly acknowledging that AI is changing workforce requirements across the industry.
What severance support will employees receive?
To soften the impact, the company said affected workers will receive extended severance support. Employees affected by the layoffs will continue to receive full base pay through the end of 2026.
For workers based in the United States, healthcare coverage will also remain active through the year.
Cloudflare further confirmed that stock equity for departing employees will continue vesting until August 15. Even employees who had not yet completed their one-year vesting requirement will reportedly receive prorated equity benefits.
The company’s approach reflects a broader trend across Silicon Valley, where firms are increasingly balancing aggressive AI investment with workforce reductions to simplify operations and cut costs.
Over the past year, multiple technology companies have cited AI automation, productivity gains, and operational restructuring as reasons for reducing headcount.
For many workers across the industry, the message is becoming harder to ignore: AI is no longer only transforming products and services. It is beginning to redefine the tech workforce itself.
