China flooded with startups launching AI-powered sex dolls

Artificial intelligence continues to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, and China is now exploring its application in creating AI-powered sex dolls.

According to a South China Morning Post report, several AI and robotics companies in the country are launching AI-powered ‘companion’ bots as a quick way to make some good money. Moreover, existing sex doll manufacturers see AI as a significant pivot, a new element that can revive slumping sales.

One of them, Shenzhen-based Starpery Technology, a leading producer of sex dolls, is developing advanced AI companions that can interact both verbally and physically with users.

Evan Lee, CEO of Starpery, another sex doll manufacturer,, told SCMP that their next-generation sex dolls are designed to talk and respond to touch, with prototypes expected by August 2024.

These new generations of dolls often feature sophisticated sensors and AI, allowing them to move and converse, thus providing a more engaging and lifelike experience than traditional sex dolls.

Starpery aims to foster emotional connections with these AI companions, striving to overcome technical challenges such as battery capacity and mimicking human muscle flexibility.

However, the production of these advanced robots is costly, particularly because expensive components like reducers account for 30 percent of the robot’s cost.

Starpery plans to make these AI dolls more affordable. Current prices are around $1,500, significantly lower than high-end models like Abyss Creations’ Harmony doll, which starts at $6,000.

Despite the excitement surrounding these advancements, ethical considerations are plentiful.

Critics warn that AI companions could blur ethical lines, perpetuate harmful stereotypes, and diminish genuine human connections.

Furthermore, the rapid development of AI technologies often outpaces existing legal frameworks, creating regulatory uncertainties.

Starpery has ambitious plans. By 2025, the company aims to develop robots capable of performing household chores, assisting people with disabilities, and providing elderly care. By 2030, they envision robots that can protect individuals from hazardous jobs.

The future of AI-powered companions is indeed intriguing. It promises a new kind of interaction that blends technology and emotional connectivity while also posing important ethical and societal questions.
