Apple’s new AI-powered ‘Layered Recordings’ in iOS 18.2 update, makes Voice Memos the ultimate recording studio

With the release of iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced an exciting new feature to the Voice Memos app, making it a powerful tool for musicians, podcasters, and content creators. iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max users will now be able to layer vocal tracks on top of existing instrumental recordings, all within the Voice Memos app—no headphones required.

A digital studio at your fingertips

This new AI-driven feature, called “Layered Recordings,” allows users to simultaneously record vocals and instruments using the iPhone’s speaker and the microphones on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. The feature works thanks to the A18 Pro chip and machine learning, which enables the app to create two individual tracks that can later be mixed and edited in professional software like Logic Pro. Musicians can record their vocals on top of a variety of instrumental backgrounds, such as piano or acoustic guitar, or even use an existing instrumental mix directly in Voice Memos for a smoother recording experience.

The feature also makes it easy to transfer these layered recordings between devices. Users can sync their tracks from Voice Memos to Mac and drag them into a Logic Pro session for further editing. This integration with Logic Pro allows for seamless production on both Mac and iPad, making it easier than ever for creators to work on their projects from anywhere.

A game changer for musicians and creators

The update offers a much-needed replacement for Apple’s discontinued Music Memos app, which many musicians had relied on before its shutdown in 2021. With the addition of Layered Recordings, the Voice Memos app is positioned as an all-in-one tool for creating, recording, and mixing music without needing complex equipment or professional software right from the start.

Apple showcased this new feature with a holiday track titled “Maybe This Christmas” by Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce, and Greg Wells, highlighting how artists can use Voice Memos to record their vocals and build a song directly on their iPhone.

Perfect for podcasts and content creation

While this feature is ideal for musicians, it’s also a fantastic tool for podcasters and other content creators. They can record tracks or podcasts on the go, without worrying about external noise or needing to be in a professional studio. The AI-powered transcription feature, also part of the iOS 18 update, further enhances the Voice Memos app by allowing users to view transcriptions of their recordings.

Exclusively for iPhone 16 Pro models

Due to the hardware requirements of the A18 Pro chip, Layered Recordings is only available on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This means that users with the base iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus, which use the A18 chip, will not have access to this feature.

Overall, the iOS 18.2 update transforms Voice Memos into a versatile digital studio, making it easier than ever for users to create professional-quality recordings directly from their iPhones.
