Apple working on 20-inch MacBook with a foldable display, to start mass-manufacturing in 2027

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on Apple’s potential plans to introduce a groundbreaking 20-inch MacBook featuring a foldable screen within the next three years.

Kuo, known for his accurate predictions, revealed in a recent post on X that Apple’s development roadmap includes the 20.3-inch MacBook, anticipated to commence mass production in 2027. However, specific details about the device remain under wraps.

Kuo’s disclosure aligns with murmurs from other industry insiders, including display industry analyst Ross Young and Korean website The Elec, who have also hinted at the possibility of a 20-inch MacBook.

To provide context, Apple’s current most extensive laptop offering is the 16-inch MacBook Pro, with the 17-inch MacBook Pro discontinued in 2012.

Despite outlining the approximate screen size, Kuo refrained from divulging finer details regarding the design of the purported foldable MacBook.

Highlighting the uniqueness of the 20-inch MacBook within Apple’s foldable product lineup, Kuo suggested a distinct development trajectory, indicating that foldable versions of the iPhone or iPad are not on the immediate horizon.

Speculation about a foldable MacBook isn’t new. In 2022, Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinted at Apple’s exploration of foldable notebooks, explicitly mentioning a device with a 20-inch display.

Adding to the intrigue, earlier this year, The Information reported Apple’s ongoing experimentation with foldable iPhone prototypes since 2018. These prototypes include two distinct designs, one resembling a traditional smartphone and the other bearing similarities to an iPad, albeit with foldable capabilities.

Kuo’s recent statement suggests that Apple’s focus on foldable technology revolves around the expansive MacBook, potentially indicating that foldable iPhones or iPads may not be in the immediate pipeline.

While Apple remains tight-lipped about its foldable product plans, its major competitors, Samsung and Google, have made significant strides in this domain.

Samsung has launched multiple generations of its clamshell and book-style foldable phones, while Google introduced the Pixel Fold last year. Rumors circulate about a second-generation device in development.
