Apple launches iOS 18.2, Apple Intelligence finally gets ChatGPT-powered Siri, Image Playground and more

Apple has just launched iOS 18.2, bringing a host of new features to iPhones, with a particular focus on enhancing the Apple Intelligence suite. The update follows the first wave of improvements that came with iOS 18 in October 2024, and it takes the generative AI functionality even further. The new features are designed to elevate user experience, from creative tools to smarter Siri interactions.

The iOS 18.2 update, with build number 22C152, includes several key additions, most notably in image generation using AI. Users can expect more advanced features that leverage Apple’s generative AI tools, which were first introduced in the previous update.

Image Playground and Genmoji take the spotlight.

One of the standout new features is Image Playground, a visual image generator that creates images based on text prompts. Users can either input their own descriptions or use pre-set prompts to generate unique images. These can be easily imported into documents or Notes, making it an excellent tool for anyone looking to add a visual flair to their digital content. The feature even includes an “Image Wand,” which lets you generate images directly from text keywords in your Notes app.

For those who enjoy expressing themselves with emojis, iOS 18.2 introduces Genmoji in iMessage. This allows users to generate emoji-style images based on prompts, as well as create emoji representations of their contacts or other images. It adds a fun, personalized touch to conversations.

Siri gets smarter with ChatGPT integration

Siri also receives an upgrade in iOS 18.2, with improved animation and enhanced product knowledge. The biggest change, however, is Siri’s ability to hand over certain queries to ChatGPT.

This integration means that for more complex questions, Siri can tap into the AI-powered ChatGPT to provide better answers, adding an extra layer of functionality to the voice assistant.

Other new features

Alongside the Apple Intelligence updates, iOS 18.2 introduces a useful new feature in Find My: Share Item Location. This allows users to share the location of an AirTag or other Find My accessories with third parties. For example, it could help track lost luggage by sharing the AirTag’s location with an airline, making it easier to find items without constant manual updates.

Apple Intelligence is also expanding its language support, with the update adding English variants for the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. More languages, including Chinese, additional English variants, and other European and Asian languages, will be rolled out in 2025.

To install the update manually, users can go to Settings, select General, and then Software Update. If automatic updates are disabled, users will need to manually download and install the update.
