Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the world’s top selling smartphones

While Samsung outdid forecasts by scoring massive profits in Q2 2017, the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus remained this year’s highest selling smartphone models. According to the latest report by Strategy Analytics, sales in Apple’s iPhone 7 and 7 Plus plumeted from 21.5 and 17.5 million units in Q1 to 16.9 and 15.1 million units in Q2 but still managed to keep Samsung’s flagship in third place.

Samsung made more profits overall than arch rivals Apple while smashing internal profit forecasts for the period between April and July largely due to sales of its flagship Galaxy S8 and S8+.The Korean tech giants sold 10.2 million units of the Galaxy S8 and 9 million units of the Galaxy S8+ coming through as the highest selling Android smartphone by a margin.

While this may be a win for Samsung despite falling behind Apple in sales, the numbers do suggest that Apple flagships still rule the market in terms of sales. This would come as a major boost for Apple considering the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are already almost a year old, compared to its Android counterparts.

report by Pocket Now also pointed out how Apple, despite the decline in sales, was still able to push ahead of internal profit forecasts. This comes inspite of the meagre updates the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus brought to its previous flagships. Samsung on the other hand, brought some major updates to previous year’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge this year, including a major design overhaul.

The report also featured Chinese maker Xiaomi in fifth place, having sold 5.5 million units of the Redmi 4A in the second quarter of the year, which translated to a global market share of 1.5 percent.
