Apple ecosystem directly employed over 1.5L since Aug 2021, is India’s top blue-collar job creator

Apple is turning out to be crucial for creating employment in India, especially when you consider blue-collar jobs. Since the introduction of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones in August 2021, Apple’s presence in India has significantly contributed to job creation, according to a report by The Economic Times.

The report indicates that over 150,000 individuals have been directly employed within the Apple ecosystem, making the tech giant India’s leading blue-collar job creator. Most of these employees are young, first-time job seekers aged between 19 and 24.

Additionally, the report highlights that around 300,000 additional jobs have been generated indirectly through Apple’s operations in India. The company employs nearly 3,000 people directly, with its iOS app development supporting over 1 million jobs across various sectors.

Apple’s focus on India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, is attributed to geopolitical tensions and market challenges in the US and China. Apple has expanded its local production efforts since initiating iPhone manufacturing in India in 2017 under the PLI scheme.

Working closely with suppliers, including Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, the company has increased the assembly of the latest iPhone models and the production of various components within India. These efforts have led to the creation of over 77,000 direct jobs within these contract manufacturing firms.

Furthermore, Apple’s supplier ecosystem in India has experienced rapid growth, creating over 70,000 new direct jobs. Critical contributors to job creation among Apple’s suppliers include Tata Electronics, Salcomp Technologies, Foxlink, and Sunwoda.

Companies such as Avary Technologies, CCL Industries, and Flex have also played significant roles in job creation within the ecosystem.

Apple recently launched a women’s health educational program to support the burgeoning workforce and promote diversity as part of its $50 million Supplier Employee Development Fund. This initiative aims to empower and educate Apple’s supply chain employees, further contributing to India’s economic growth and development.

With Apple’s continued investment and expansion in India, the country’s role in the global technology landscape is expected to strengthen, providing further opportunities for job creation and economic prosperity.
