Apple seems to be gearing up to expand its AI capabilities by integrating Google’s Gemini into Apple Intelligence. A recent iOS 18.4 beta update has revealed hints that users may soon have the option to choose Gemini alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Apple had previously made it clear that Apple Intelligence would work with multiple AI providers, and Google’s Gemini was always on the list. Now, with a reference to Gemini spotted in the latest developer beta, it looks like the tech giant is getting closer to making this a reality.
Hints hidden in iOS 18.4 Beta
The discovery was first made by 9to5Mac, which found the reference in a backend update rolled out with the latest beta version. Interestingly, the code mentions Google but doesn’t directly name Gemini, just as it refers to OpenAI rather than specifically mentioning ChatGPT.
Reports from early 2024 had already suggested that Apple was planning to integrate Gemini into its AI system, but it’s unclear why it has taken almost a year for this to materialise. The new discovery suggests that Apple might finally be moving forward with its plans.
How Apple Intelligence will work with multiple AI models
Apple’s approach to AI integration appears to be straightforward—Siri will handle user requests locally on the device first, and if more advanced processing is needed, it will send the query to an AI model like ChatGPT or, potentially, Gemini. Users will have control over whether their requests are sent to these external services.
Currently, Apple’s deal with OpenAI ensures that user queries are processed without storing personal information. If Apple brings Gemini into the mix, similar privacy protections are expected. Other AI models, such as Alibaba’s and Baidu’s in China, are also likely to be integrated in the same way, providing more choices for users.
Free addition or a paid feature?
While the inclusion of Gemini would add another layer of functionality to Apple Intelligence, there’s no indication that users will have to pay for it. Apple has been rumoured to introduce paid AI features in the future, but these are not expected until at least 2027.
Even though the presence of this code in the iOS 18.4 beta strongly hints at an upcoming Gemini integration, it doesn’t guarantee an immediate rollout. Apple could still make changes before a final release, but all signs suggest that users might soon get to pick between ChatGPT and Google Gemini when using Apple Intelligence.
